University has established a Center for Studies in Taxation with the objective of imparting consultancy and research studies in the field of taxation under the eminent guidance of well known taxation expert Mr. B.M. Kothari as Director of the Center.

| Center for Studies in Taxation has been established by the University with a view to provide facilities for deep study and research in relation to the various provisions of Taxation Laws. It will also provide opportunity to the students to understand the important practical problems arising in relation to interpretation of various taxation laws (Direct Tax Laws, Indirect Tax Laws and also the International Taxation Laws). |
The Center will inter-alia carryout the following activities : |
| Direct Taxes & Indirect Taxes : |
- In-depth study of the provisions of Income Tax Act and other Direct Taxes Act as well as important Indirect Taxes, such as Excise and Customs Laws and Service Tax Laws etc.

- Deep research in relation to important provisions of Direct Taxes Laws & Indirect Tax Laws.
|
- Suggesting the Government measures for simplification and rationalization of the Direct Taxes and Indirect Taxes including suggestions for clean and efficient administration of Tax Laws.
|
- Regular study of case laws and quickly suggest necessary remedial measures both for the Government and the Tax payers.
|
- Since the Taxation Laws are subject to frequent amendments, the impact of such amendments should be thoroughly understood and soon communicated to the connected outside world.
|
- To impart practical training to the research scholars and other law students by the process of case studies practically faced by the corporate tax payers and other taxpayers.
|
- To organize seminars and conferences and invite leading Tax Dignitaries to deliver lectures on important topics of practical importance.
|
- To arrange Moot Courts relating to important legal points arising out of taxation laws and also to help the law students to represent in such Moot Courts arranged by other institutions.

- To provide consultancy services to the corporate sector, Government or other taxpayers in relation to taxation matters.

| International Taxation : |
- In-depth study and research of International Taxation Laws including the laws relating to Foreign Exchanges, Foreign Trade and RBI Regulations governing International Transactions.
|
- To thoroughly understand the different systems of Transfer Pricing, the relevant Rules and Judgments.
|
- To study the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and the relevant rules and regulations.
|
- In-depth study and research of the relevant provisions of direct tax laws and indirect tax laws relating to non-residents and relating to international transactions including mergers, demergers, joint ventures, amalgamation and acquisitions etc.
|
- To provide consultancy services to NRIs, MNCs, Overseas concerns in relation to Indian Direct Taxes and Indirect Taxes applicable to such persons / concerns.

| Consultancy Services : |
| The Center for Studies of Taxation will provide consultancy services to Corporate Sector, Other taxpayers and to the Government on the terms and conditions as may be decided by NLU from time to time. The consultancy services will be provided by a team of brilliant Research Scholars and law students of NLU. Sh. B.M. Kothari, a former member of Income Tax Appellate Tribunal having an experience of 45 years in the field of taxation, as a practicing C.A., later as Member ITAT and also as an editor of a leading Taxation Journal has agreed to act as Honorary Director of the Center for studies of Taxation of NLU. The NLU also intends to involve active participation f leading Tax Advocates in relation to conducting of in-depth study and research by Research Scholars and Law Students with regard to consultancy services under their able guidance and supervision. |
| The consultancy services in relation to Direct Taxes, Indirect Taxes and International Taxation will inter-alia include the following: |
- Opinion on complex issues of Taxation.

- Tax Planning in consonance with legislative intention.
|
- Drafting of written submissions required to be submitted before Taxation Authorities and before the Appellate Authorities to support legal claims and also to challenge the invalid and arbitrary additions made.

- Research on various judgments rendered by different Courts and Tribunals including providing the gist of judgments of Hon'ble High Courts, Hon'ble Supreme Court and decisions of Tribunal in relation to the concerned point of law, the present relevance and status of such judgments in view of subsequent legislative amendments or in view of subsequent judgments, will be pointed out, as far as possible.

- Drafting of petition s / appeals before the Tribunals, Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR), Representation before Settlement Commission, Hon'ble High Courts and Hon'ble Supreme Court.

- Preparation of gist of important facts, date wise sequence of important events and gist of relevant and important judgments for presenting before the Ld. Advocates, who will argue the matters before the Courts / Appellate Authorities.

- Reply to queries on intricate questions of law.
|
- Consultation regarding computation of transfer pricing and the gist of relevant judgments.
|

For Non-Residents/MNCs/Overseas Concerns |
|
- To provide guidance for obtaining necessary approvals and permissions from the regulatory authorities such as Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Foreign Exchange Promotion Board (FIPB) & Secretariat of Industrial Assurance (SIA), Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and Ministry of Industries and other connected departments.

- To provide gist of relevant provisions of Direct Taxes and Indirect Taxes.

- To assist them in the matter relating to implementation of Transfer Pricing Rules in India.
